Overview:
To increase students’ knowledge on Chinese-language cinema through
viewing, reading and writing on films from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and other Chinese-speaking parts of the world.
Objectives:
• To learn about the film industries in Chinese-speaking regions around the world, including the historical background, operations, trends and major directors.
• To learn about different cinematic styles and aesthetics of Chinese-language films
Textbook
No required textbook. Handouts will be posted on the course’s website.
Viewing
You are required to view the movies on your own. A Netflix subscription is strongly recommended.
Assignments and grades
1. Blogs: You are required to write an entry of 250 words for each of the films we cover in this class. They need to include three parts: summary, major theme, and your reaction to the film. 60%
2. Presentation: Details TBA 40%
